What to Expect in Your First Week at Air Cadets

Joining 398 Air Training Corps is an exciting step, but it's natural to feel nervous about what lies ahead. Understanding what to expect during your first week can help you feel more confident and prepared.
Your Welcome and Induction
On your first evening, you'll arrive at the squadron and be warmly welcomed by staff and cadets. You'll complete some basic paperwork and meet the officers who will guide your training. Don't worry if you don't remember everyone's names immediately—everyone remembers being new, and they'll be patient with you.
Getting to Know the Squadron
You'll receive a tour of the facilities, including the parade ground, classrooms, and other areas where training takes place. This helps you understand the layout and feel more comfortable moving around. You'll also learn about the squadron's traditions and values, which form the foundation of Air Cadets culture.
Physical Training and Drill
Expect some gentle physical activity during your first week. You won't be thrown into intense fitness routines immediately. Instead, instructors will assess your current fitness level and introduce you to basic drill movements. These movements might seem formal, but they teach discipline, coordination, and teamwork.
Meeting Your Peers
One of the best parts of joining Air Cadets is the friendships you'll make. Your first week is a great opportunity to get to know other new cadets and existing members. Everyone shares a common interest in aviation and personal development, making it easier to connect.
Uniforms and Kit
You'll be issued your cadet uniform, which is an important part of the experience. Learning how to wear and care for your uniform properly is part of developing military bearing and pride in the organisation. Staff will help you understand the correct way to wear it.
Setting Expectations
Your first week will include clear explanations of what Air Cadets involves, the commitment required, and the opportunities available. Understanding these expectations from the start helps you get the most from your time with us. There's no pressure—this is your chance to ask questions and clarify anything you're unsure about.
Moving Forward
By the end of your first week, you'll have a clearer picture of Air Cadets life. You'll understand the structure, have made some new friends, and begun your journey towards developing valuable skills. Remember, every experienced cadet was once exactly where you are now, feeling the same mix of excitement and nervousness.
